2-Tier -- Can be the Advertiser or Publisher -- it is the affiliates that sign up under you.  You may get a percent of fee on the sale that the affiliate makes under you.


A

Above the Fold -- The location of a banner on a web page, visible to visitors without the need to scroll the browser window -- (Within the top view of a webpage).

Adsense Arbitrage -- Adsense arbitrage is where people make money by bidding on less expensive terms to drive people to a page with only AdSense or Network ads.

Advertiser/Merchant -- The person who is having their site advertised.

Adware -- This is a programs that sends banner ads for you to see.  May seem harmless, however, the programs compels your computer to send personal data to the source so that they can send ads that may interest you.

Affiliate Arbitrage -- the practice of companies diverting brand traffic to their sites by similar or identical landing-pages through affiliate links by way of PPC campaigns.

Affiliate Fraud -- Bogus activity produced by an affiliate in an attempt to generate  unearned  revenue.

Affiliate Manager --The manager of an Affiliate Program who is responsible for creating a newsletter, establishing incentive programs, forecasting, etc. (There are some webmasters that request the help of an Individual to manage their website -- giving them a percentage of the profits.)

Approval -- Many on-line merchants will review the site of a potential affiliate.  The affiliate waits for the approval -- once accepted the affiliate can begin using the link.

Associate -- Another name for an affiliate.

Autoresponders -- Automation of  the process of following up e-mail marketing leads.


B

Backlink bombing -- manipulation of backlinks by a webmaster, in which he interlinks his websites using the same IP address to get a higher page ranking..

Bandwidth - Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred to or from a website or server,

Banner -- Is a hot-linked image to a website.  It's purpose is to invite the user to click.

Black Hat SEO -- Black Hat SEO is a process by which people use methods in creating a website with automated tools -- such as scraping content from other peoples websites for the only purpose of driving traffic to the site.


C

Campaign -- A name you give an affiliate program, so that you can better identify where the sales or click thrus and traffics are generating from.

Chargebacks -- A chargeback occurs when a buyer asks their credit card company to remove a charge from their credit card statement. The credit card company will ask the buyer to explain why they are disputing the charge. Possible reasons: 1)stolen credit card  2) buyer feels that seller did not fulfill their side of the agreement.

Click Through (Pay Per Click) -- You get paid per click for every visitor that clicks through to the client's site.

Click Through Rate (CTR) -- This is represented as a percentage.  Thus, if a link is clicked on 10 times on average of 100 impressions you have a CTR of 10%.

Cookie duration  -- Is the link of time the merchant pays you commission for visitors that have been tracked from your site.  Note: the cookie can only be read by the Web server that sent the cookie.

Conversion Rate -- Is the measure of  the % of people that make purchases to the total number of visitors.

CPM (Pay Per Thousand Impressions) -- An impression is one display of a banner. This is in reference to banners. So a CPM of  $4.00 is equal equivalent to: $4.00 for every 1000 visitors.

Crimeware -- is a form of identity theft-accessing a computer user's online accounts at financial services companies and online retailers -- their goal is to take funds from your accounts. This is done through keystroke loggers, redirecting user to counterfeit website controlled by the thief, steal passwords cached on a user's system.

Cybersquatting -- Is using a domain name with bad-faith intent to profit from the goodwill of a trademark that belongs to someone else.


D

Dead Link -- An Internet link that does not lead to a site or a web page.

Deep Linking -- Placing a link on your website to another, bypassing the home page, to give your visits quicker access to a particular web page.

Description Tag -- A HTML tag that is used on a web page, so as to generate a listing on a search engine.

Domain -- An Internet address to a specific site.  The most important part of the domain is at the end -- typical top-level domains are .com, .net, .edu, .gov, .org.  Often called information pages because they often contain helpful and useful content.

Doorway Page --  Page created to achieve for the main purpose of  achieving high ranking in the search engines.

Drop Catching -- Where people will snag a domain name that owners have let expire and try to resell them or use their links that is associated with their name.


G

GEO Targeting -- Adwords term that means the targeting of your ad to specific geographical locations and languages.

Google Adsense -- Is a Google Advertising method that allows webmasters to deliver targeted advertisments to their website, as well as, to give webmasters another source of revenue.

Google Adwords -- Is Google Advertising program that is based on pay-per-click pricing.

 
H

Hijackers -- these are programs that take control of your browsers, opening up pages which you do not choose to view. (A telltale sign, is if you seem a info box pop up in your internet session and asks what file do you want to look at -- reboot -- and if you cannot stop the action you will have to create a fresh copy of your operating system)


I

Inbound Links -- Links in which one site directs a visitor to another site.

IP Address -- is a unique number that is composed of 4 parts that is separated by dots. e.g. 163.120.222.1. Every machine that connects to the Internet has a unique IP number.


K

Keyword -- A word used to find pages when conducting a search.

Keyword Stuffing -- Unethical search engine optimization practice, where your keywords are loaded in the content or in the keyword metatags.


L

Leads (Pay Per Lead) -- lead is when you link to a site and a visitor clicks on the affiliate link, which takes them to that site, and generates some sort of action. This may require a visitor to sign up for something,  a newsletter,  forum or even  a sale. Leads where the person has to sign up for a newsletter are usually around 50 cents, leads for credit card sites can be as much as $30.00 per lead.

Link Baiting --  Using interesting/informative/useful information that will make people to want to link to you.  Such as free tools.

Link Spam -- Spam in the comments of a blog article. It takes advantage of a site's ability to allow visitors to post links.

Log file -- A file that records the activity on a Web Server.

Long tail phases - three or more keywords used in a search string
